Captain Mike, Your Key West Fishing Guide is Also a Competitive Sportsman Which is Why He Offers Key West Swordfishing Trips as They Are The Last Great Gamefish.
Swordfish is one of the last great gamefish. One of the most sought after gamefish and the most elusive, have taken up residence in the waters off Key West. New live bait techniques have proven to be quite successful. A swordfish is by far the strongest of the billfish family. The swordfish's purple iridescent glow at night and the sheer muscle on the other end of the line have few comparisons. The majestic giant of the deep blue has has been showing up in fairly reliable numbers in Key West fishing grounds, making fishing for them again a strong possibility. You must beware that the majority of my swordfish catches are releases. The majority of the fish are between 75 and 150lbs. They lie far offshore so the weather plays a role in the times when it is feasible to even run a Key West sword fishing charter. Conditions need to be right to enjoy a night of fishing outside of Wood's Wall. But when all goes well, the night is tranquil and peaceful till the reel screams in the dark. Then the fight begins.
There is nothing that can test an anglers skill and resolve more than fishing for and hooking up to a Key West swordfish. Usually caught at night, swordfish are big, sleek, and a powerful hunk of pure fish muscle which is why they have been aptly called the "Gladiator of the Deep." It is a fitting nickname and when you get one on the line you will quickly see why. Rods double over, reels screem as line is peeled off, and you are doing your best to slow him down even a little bit, and all this at night on the ocean where it can get very dark. It is a night time Key West fishing trip you will never forget. So bring your camera to get pictures of you fighting this under water beast but make sure you have your flash turned on because it can get very dark on the nighttime Key West fishing grounds.
Picture yourself on the water, far from shore floating on waters that are calm like floating on a saltwater pond. Pitch black everywhere except around the boat where your Captain will have floods setup that will light up the immediate area around the boat and under the boat. The ocean will light up like you are in a greenish blue crystal clear swimming pool with baitfish swimming all around the boat. In addition to small baitfish along comes the occasional dolphin, shark, and any number of the many sportfish that frequent the waters off Key West.
Key West deep sea fishing for swordfish is usually done at "Wood's Wall" or just "the wall" which is in up to 2000 feet of water which by any fishing standards is deep. Of course you are not fishing on the bottom but rather 100 feet to 400 feet down, again at night. During the day time hours swordfish hang down deep near the ocean floor where the rough bottom is. At night they swim and feed much higher in the water column giving anglers a much better chance for a hook-up. And a swordfish can easily make a run to the bottom at which point you have a nasty fight on your hands. This is when it is just you, your fishing skills, and your stamina against one of mother nature's toughest creatures. A Key West swordfish charter is a trip you will definitely want to come back to. Once you hook your swordfish then you are guaranteed to be hooked on Key West swordfishing.
